Sustainable Stewardship

We have created a blog to provide you with the latest news and up-to-date information regarding our wedding and event venue in the Asheville NC area mountains. One of our greatest priorities is our sustainable stewardship and we want to tell you more about what we do to take care of our little slice of heaven.

At Brahma Ridge Farm and Event Center, we feel moved to become responsible stewards of our forty-one acres of land and woods. Our efforts may be a drop in the bucket (or maybe not) as a cure for our planet’s environmental ills, but every little bit helps. Rob’s son, Chris Denton, is trained in permaculture and not only built most of our farm infrastructure but has also guided us on our sustainability mission.

Our super-insulated Earthberm House relies primarily on solar energy for heating in winter. Its seasonal outdoor shower is solar-heated, too. The farm tractor runs on bio-diesel and our farm cart is an all-electric vehicle, which will, hopefully, soon be solar-charged. Future projects include solar hot water and photovoltaic electricity.

At Brahma Ridge we grow organic fruits, berries, herbs, flowers and also some vegetables year-round in our greenhouse. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used on the farm. Rather, we take advantage of our neighbors’ horse manure and composted materials for fertilizer. Orchard crops include blueberries, raspberries, peaches, apples, plums, cherries, pecans, and nectarines. Medicinal herbs such as echinacea, ginseng, goldenseal, poppy, and calendula are intentionally cultivated as well.

Our property has a Forestry Plan that requires us to responsibly manage our thousands of trees through selective harvesting and removal of deadwood fuel from the forest floor. Our catering kitchen is built from some of our homegrown lumber. Building materials are chosen for low toxicity near our gardens. We recycle all bottles, cans, glass, cardboard, and plastic.

We invite you to visit us and share with us your own experiences in caring for the land.
